“Pregnancy is really empowering,” Sania Mirza tells Gulf News in a recent interview. “What we are doing and what we are creating as women, nobody else in this world can do.”

Mirza, a three-time doubles and three-time mixed doubles Grand Slam champion believes that women should not be held back because of their decision to have a child. The 31-year-old says it’s not fair that such an important decision can often do harm to a woman’s career arc.

“Pregnancy in no way should hold you back,” she said. “I don’t think it’s fair that pregnancy should be a sort of a drawback on either your career or your life.”

The Indian star, who is expecting a child this October, is already planning a return. She says she’d like to be at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo for certain, and if things go well, she’ll return to tennis even sooner.

“I think that’s a realistic goal to be honest,” she said. “I feel like Olympics 2020 seems like a very doable thing.”

Mirza paired with Rohan Bopanna to reach the semifinals at the Rio Games in 2016, and she has competed for India in each of the last three Olympic Games.
