Andy Murray's potent and versatile backhand is the foundation of his game.

The third-ranked Scot provides his top three tips for a solid backhand in the video above, produced by British Tennis ahead of Great Britain's Davis Cup quarterfinal against France.

Murray offers these three essential elements for mastering a strong backhand.

  1. Use your legs. "Don't stand too upright," Murray says. "You want to get down nice and low. Bend your knees."
  2. Strong shoulder turn. "If you stand straight onto the court, you'll end up using your wrists and you'll find the ball will shoot off to the sides," Murray says. "Stay balanced and you'll get good power behind the ball."
  3. Develop variety. "You want to use the slice backhand as well to have some variety in your shots," Murray advises. "That's something that takes time to practice, but it's very important to have variety on the backhand side. All the best players in the world do. Roger Federer is a perfect example of that."
