Serena Williams Hits Another Rankings Milestone

Monday marks Serena Williams’ 250th week as the WTA’s No. 1 player, and her 127th week at the top dog of women’s tennis, consecutively. Williams took over No. 1 on February, 28, 2013, and is now only 29 weeks from matching the WTA’s second-longest streak for consecutive weeks at No. 1. Only Martina Navratilova (156 weeks) and Steffi Graf (186) weeks, have held the top spot without a break for longer.

Williams has other goals to accomplish before then, but if she can hang on until September 19th of next year, she’ll tie Graf for the longest ever run at No. 1 at 186 weeks consecutively.

In the shorter term, Williams is now only 10 weeks behind Chris Evert for total weeks at No. 1. Only Evert (260), Navratilova (332) and Graf (377) have been at No. 1 longer than Williams.

Only four players—Roger Federer (302), Pete Sampras (286), Ivan Lendl (270) and Jimmy Connors (268) —have surpassed the 250-week mark on the men’s side.

Perhaps most remarkable of all Williams’ ranking achievements is that she became the oldest No. 1 in the WTA’s history when she claimed the No. 1 ranking over two years ago, at age 31. She has now held the No. 1 ranking longer in succession than she did in her whole career prior (she had 123 weeks at No. 1 prior to February 18, 2013).

127 weeks later at 33, Williams is nowhere close to letting it go. She has double the points of world No. 2 Maria Sharapova at the moment.
