Nadal Will Face Verdasco in Opening Match at Hamburg

Rafael Nadal will meet a fellow Spaniard in his first-round match at next week’s Bet-at-Home Open in Hamburg, the draw revealed on Saturday.

Nadal, who took a late wild card into the event, has not competed in Hamburg since 2008, when he defeated Roger Federer in the final.

The Spaniard will open with Fernando Verdasco in round one, and will face either Jiri Vesely or Andreas Haider-Maurer in the second round if he advances.

Nadal owns a 13-2 lifetime edge over Verdasco, but he has dropped the last two against his compatriot, including a recent meeting in March in Miami.

If the seeds hold, Nadal would face 5th-seeded Pablo Cuevas in the quarterfinals and 7th-seeded Andreas Seppi in the semifinals.

Second-seeded Tommy Robredo will open with a rematch with German Alexander Zverev, while third-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut will begin with a rematch with Borna Coric. Robredo defeated Zverev in straight sets in Saturday’s Bastad semifinals, while Bautista Agut defeated Coric in straight sets in the Umag quarterfinals on Friday.

Nadal owns an ATP best 339-30 record on clay with 46 titles to his name. He is currently three behind Guillermo Vilas for the all-time lead in ATP titles on clay.
