It will be Nadal's first tournament since he was upset by world No. 102 Dustin Brown in the second round of Wimbledon last month. After Hamburg, Nadal is scheduled to play Masters tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati followed by the U.S. Open.
The 14-time Grand Slam champion will make his first Hamburg appearance in seven years.
He defeated then world No. 1 Roger Federer in the 2008 Hamburg final back when the tournament was still a Masters event. That victory capped a week in which Nadal knocked off Andy Murray, his former mentor, Carlos Moya, and then world No. 3 Novak Djokovic to reach the final.
Nadal was runner-up to Federer in the 2007 final. In his only other Hamburg appearance, he fell to Gaston Gaudio in the 2003 round of 16.
