Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Despite losing 7-6(2), 6-1 to Ana Ivanovic in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif. today, Sabine Lisicki goes home with her own slice of WTA history. The big-serving German cracked a first serve in the first set at 131 MPH, which is a new WTA record. The previous record of 129 MPH was set by Venus Williams at the 2007 US Open.

Lisicki led by a break for much of the opening set before Ivanovic drew level, and slammed down the serve to hold for 6-5 in the opening set. For the duration of the match, the reading was unofficial, but it was confirmed by the WTA and its stat-keeping company IDS following the match.

Lisicki was already pretty familiar with big serves in Stanford; she has previously recorded a 125 MPH serve at the 2011 edition of the tournament.
