Ahead of his 20th Australian Open appearance, Roger Federer pays homage to one of the reasons he became the player that he is today: former coach Peter Carter.

In an interview with CNN’s Christina Macfarlane last month, Federer bursts into tears in remembrance of the Aussie who guided him in his formative years before he tragically passed away in 2002.

At one point in the interview (2:16) Macfarlane says “He passed away the year before you won your first Slam at Wimbledon. What do you think he would have thought to see you hear now with 20 Grand Slams?”

Federer ponders for a moment, then the tears begin to flow.

“I hope he would have been proud,” Federer says. “I guess he wouldn’t want me to be a wasted talent. I guess it was somewhat of a wake-up call for me when he passed away.”

CNN plans to roll out the interview in five parts, so stay tuned for more in the coming weeks.
