The Bank of the West Classic in Stanford has officially been replaced.
The Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, will take place at San Jose State from which runs July 30-Aug. 5, the WTA and IMG announced on Monday. The new summer tournament replaces the former Bank of the West Classic, which was disbanded when Stanford University announced a new policy that forbids corporate sponsored events on campus.
The Bank of the West Classic had been held at Stanford University since 1971. According to the San Jose Mercury News, San Jose State announced a five-year, minimum $1.5 million deal with IMG that will see the company’s rental fees fund the construction of a custom stadium court that will allow a capacity of 4,000 fans. Renovations to locker rooms, a player’s lounge, and coaches’ offices are also part of the deal. The current Spartans Tennis Complex features six fully illuminated outdoor courts.
