AO Final: Most Important Match of All Time?

A potential Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal Australian Open final would be bigger than a rematch of the 2009 Melbourne final.

It would be the most important match of all time because of the ramifications Roger vs. Rafa would have on tennis history says newly-elected Hall of Famer Andy Roddick.

Should Federer capture his 18th Grand Slam title he would widen the gap with 14-time Grand Slam champion Nadal solidifying his status as Grand Slam king.

If Nadal defeats in the semifinals and Federer in the final to capture his 15th major he strengthens his position to challengefor Federer’s all-time record with Roland Garros approaching, said Roddick.

“I think it might be the most important match of all time and I don’t say that lightly," Roddick told the Australian Open's Nick McArvel in the video interview above. "But if you look at the context of history Rafa at 14, Roger at 17, if Rafa comes away and he’s won that then he’s two away from the all-time lead with the French Open staring at us in the face.

"If Roger wins he’s got 18 versus 14 he’s created enough distance that I don’t see that gap being made up. The importance of that match and where it will stand dictating the history of our game as it’s told for a long time is enormous and I don’t know that it can be overstated."
