Was it the wind, or the rust? Whatever it was, the shanks were plentiful during Sam Stosur’s 6-4, 6-2 victory over Daniela Hantuchova on Tuesday at the Apia Sydney Internationa. Remarkably, the victory marks the first time that Stosur has reached the quarterfinals at the Australian tune-up event.

After reaching the final in 2005, Stosur could only manage a 3-8 record between 2006 and 2015, failing to win consecutive matches in any of her eight appearances.

This week she’s taken two in a row and will face qualifier Monica Puig in the quarterfinals. Puig shocked Anna Karolina Schmiedlova on Tuesday, 6-1, 6-0.

Other winners were No. 8 seed Belinda Bencic, who defeated Tsvetana Pironkova, 6-3, 6-3, and No. 5 seed Karolina Pliskova, who dumped Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova out of the draw, 6-3, 6-0.
