Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Former coach of Roger Federer and current Tennis Channel commentator Paul Annacone says that Andy Murray should rethink his serving tactics.

Aussie Open Men's Final: Preview and Predictions

Annacone says Murray should be more of a spot server, rather than a big server.

Here’s what he told Christopher Clarey of the New York Times ahead of Sunday night’s Australian Open final:

“Look, I still don’t think Andy serves the right way; I think he needs to be a strategic server on both serves. I think he serves like a power server instead because, let’s be honest, the only time he gets in trouble is when he has to pull out a second serve. And against the great players, the Novaks, he’s not going to get a ton of aces anyway, so he should serve strategically and be a score server. When he gets up 30-love, 40-15, then go for the big serves, but he shouldn’t be relentless with it. I think he gets a little too predictable with his serve.”

In his pre-final press conference on Saturday in Melbourne, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic touched on the subject, saying “There has been a lot of talks about his second serve, and I'm sure he and his team are very much aware of that. He's known around the tour for one of the hardest working guys and somebody that really puts in the hours on the tennis court, and off the tennis court tries to perfect his game.”

Throught six matches, Murray has won 57 of his second-serve points in Melbourne, while Djokovic has won 62.

According to Tennis Abstract, Murray won only 34.1 percent of his second-serve points in last year’s final against Djokovic, while the Serb won 61.8 percent.
