Now this is how you hit a drop shot. Watch as Australia’s Sam Thompson puts some serious sinister English on this reflex volley, sending the ball over the net with such wicked spin that it comes all the way back to the other side of the net before a flummoxed Leander Paes can get his racquet on it.

Paes looks pretty foolish trying, but he and his mixed doubles partner Martina Hingis had the last laugh. They advanced with a 6-2, 7-6(2) win over Thompson and Masa Jovanovic.

Hingis and Paes, seeded 7th, will face Anabel Medina Garrigues and Pablo Andujar in the second round.
