Straight off his 1,000th career win, Roger Federer took to the court again in Sydney for a “Fast4” exhibition with his old mate Lleyton Hewitt.

Brisbane: Federer Notches 1,000

For those not in the know, here’s how Fast4 works: No advantages, first to 4 wins the set and tiebreaker at 3-3. Federer came out on top of Hewitt 4-3 (5-3), 2-4, 3-4 (3-5), 4-0, 4-2, but both players played pivotal roles in bringing the rowdy crowd to a frenzy with this outlandish, improvisational point. Not exactly the format—or the type of point—we’ll see in Melbourne next week, but a rollicking good time nonetheless.

Federer said he enjoyed the format and felt that it could be helpful in bringing kids into the sport, but when it comes down to it, he feels that the grueling grind of a physical tennis match is one of the things that makes the game so special.

"The beauty of our game sometimes is not knowing if you're going to be on court for 45 minutes or three hours," Federer told the Sydney Morning Herald.
