Coric Retracts Boastful Comments From Recent Interview

Is Borna Coric the "best of his generation"? According to him, perhaps not.

That's because the 18-year-old Croatian talent decided to explain and retract several of the eyebrow-raising statements that made it into a recent interview.

The world No. 95 told the Times of India earlier this week that "I'm the best of my generation" given he is the only player of his age inside the ATP top 100.

Coric also said that when he is playing his best, his game is very similar to that of World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. When not playing his best, Coric said his game was more like that of Andy Murray. Coric's comments caused quite a stir online and within the tennis community.

Perhaps, because of that, Coric on Wednesday issued an explanation on his Facebook page saying that his quotes were "misinterpreted" in the interview.

"First, regarding "the best in my generation", in and around my age group we are so lucky to have a cluster of super talented contemporaries who have most definitely pushed each and everyone of us to become better over the years. We all have a healthy rivalry," Coric said in the post.

He added, "I respect all of them. Nothing is for certain in this sport and I respect each and everyone of them."

On his self-comparisons with Djokovic and Murray, "All I wanted to say is that I am naturally a defensive player. In order to be better, I need to work on being aggressive as much as possible. In this statement they were supposed to use as examples, but I was not quoted the way I wanted."

Coric, competing this week at the Aircel Chennai Open, was defeated by top seed Stan Wawrinka in their second round match on Wednesday.
