Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

By Nick Georgandis

Martina Hingis was always known as a fierce competitor in her 15-year career that saw her win 14 Grand Slam titles. That sort of helps makes some sense of the video of her battling five able-bodied Japanese men in a televised event on “Taiku-Kai TV” that has popped up on social media of late.

Martina appears on the verge of beating the quintet when the video cuts off, and appears to be taking the “battle” just as seriously as the five young players are not, particularly the one wearing what appears to be a wig meant to either emulate Jennifer Aniston during her Friends days or perhaps a mid-1970s Bjorn Borg.

The large panel of judges and commentators suggests this might be part of a game show or some sort of reality TV, but quite honestey with 40% of the screen taken up by text, it’s best just to sit back and wonder how in the heck Hingis got roped into doing this.

Let’s hope her check didn’t bounce.
