Rafael Nadal raised a few eyebrows when he pulled out of his first ATP Cup match against Australia. Sure, he went viral cheering his mates on as they defeated Australia 3-0 on Tuesday, but what about his health, and an even more important question: will the 20-time major champion be good to go for the Australian Open?
Today, Nadal exacerbated those worries by pulling out of Spain’s ATP Cup tie against Greece, where he was scheduled to face Stefanos Tsitsipas.
“I'm not well enough to play. I’m improving bit by bit, but I’m not ready to play a match with maximum intensity,” Nadal told Spanish broadcaster Vamos. “It’s not that I’m in a really bad way, but I'm also not all right in the sense that I can't play either," he said.
Reportedly Nadal practiced for about an hour on Thursday at Melbourne Park.
The 2009 Australian Open champion still has three days to prepare for the Australian Open. The draw will take place later on Friday in Melbourne, and main draw play begins February 8.
