Ash Barty
says that the left thigh injury that caused her to bandage up that part of her body is nothing serious. The top-seeded Aussie told reporters afer her 6-1, 7-6(7) victory over Daria Gavrilova on Thursday night in Melbourne that the bandage was actually support to keep the tape from falling off during the match.
There was quite a buzz on social media that Barty was struggling during the second set of her battle with Gavrilova, as her opponent rallied from 5-2 down and earned a pair of set points in the tiebreak.
But Barty inists that it is nothing serious.
“The bandage is very big, but that's more just support so that the tape itself doesn't fall off,” she said. “It's not a very subtle tape job, you often see it on a lot of the girls. The guys can hide it beneath their shorts a little bit better.”
Barty, who faces Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round, did admit that there is a little wear and tear on her body after playing several matches after taking a full year off.
“Just a little bit of support,” she reiterated. “I played a lot of matches in the last 10 days after not playing for 12 months, which is natural. It's more of an assistance than anything else.” The Aussie told reporters that her issues started on Tuesday.
“It came on early Tuesday, warming up for the match,” she said. “But, yeah, obviously it's not affecting the way that I can play in any way. It's just more giving the leg some assistance to make sure it doesn't get to a point where it's going to affect me.:
