Simona Halep is thrilled that Romania has reached the semi-finals of Fed Cup and she hopes that it sparks growth for women’s tennis in Romania. Speaking to David Kane of WTATennis.com, the World No.3 said that she is still buzzing from being a part of Romania’s dramatic 3-2 win over the Czech Republic last weekend.
"When I started this year, I said that it's the main goal to play really well in Fed Cup and to make a big result, and I keep that," Halep told reporters on Tuesday in Doha. "I really wish we can win the next tie. It's gonna be huge for us, for our country, and I really have that desire to lift that trophy. It's amazing."
After winning her maiden major title in Paris last June, priorities have shifted for Halep. She has stated the importance of playing for her country. She said she felt like a great pressure had been lifted and she is eager pursue more lofty goals such as helping Romania achieve success in Fed Cup and also at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
“I cannot say it’s bigger, because I work and live for Grand Slams,” Halep told Kane. “In this sport, it’s the most important thing. However, I will put Fed Cup on the same stair, and keep that goal of winning as important as a Grand Slam.”
She added: “We are a small country, and we don’t have a big system in tennis, so making this result is going to help the new generation. It’s going to help kids get inspired to make something in their life and that their dreams can come true one day.”
