17-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov made a massive error in judgment in one of the biggest matches of his young career.

And he’ll pay the price.

Trailing by two sets to love to Kyle Edmund in the fifth and deciding rubber of Sunday’s Davis Cup tie against Great Britain in Ottawa, World No.234 Shapovalov angrily smashed a ball into the head of umpire Arnaud Gabas, resulting in his own disqualification and sending Mr. Gabas, who had bruising and swelling of the left eye, to a local hospital.

Canada had drawn level with Great Britain thanks to the heroics of Vasek Pospisil, who defeated Dan Evans in four sets. Pospisil took to Twitter after the incident to stick up for his young teammate.

Shapovalov himself, thought of a nice young player on the rise (he was a Wimbledon Boys Singles champion last year) and liked by many, tried to express his immense guilt about the incident afterwards.
