Second Serve

Garbine Muguruza couldn’t get past an energized Andrea Petkovic in Doha today, and as her frustration with the course of the third set mounted on Thursday, the Spaniard took it out on her coach Sam Sumyk.

“I'm trying, so tell me something I don’t know,” Muguruza snorts, as Sumyk tries to help the Spaniard, who had fallen behind Petkovic by a 4-1 score in the decider.

Sumyk quickly snaps back “It seems that you know everything.”

“Yeah, for sure,” and angry Muguruza replies.

The incident got so heated that Muguruza decided to revert to Spanish as she further excoriated her coach. Eventually, Sumyk realize that there’s not much he can do and just walks away.

Petkovic went on to clinch the 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 win for her first top-five victory since 2013.
