The 338th-ranked Brazilian wild card made his first career ATP main-draw match one to remember. The Rio resident thrilled the home crowd stunning ninth-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The left-hander continued to fire away with his forehand and showed no fear against the third-seeded Tsonga.
"It has not sunk in yet," Monteiro told the media afterward. "It's the result of work I've been doing a long time. I believed all the time in the victory."

The 21-year-old Monteiro will meet Pablo Cuevas in the second round.
