Second Serve

There were one too many unforced errors for Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis on Tuesday during his tilt with Gael Monfils at the ABN Amro. After falling behind by a set and a break he finally broke—literally—and smashed his frame maniacally into the hard court. It’s not the first time Gulbis has wrecked a frame, and it won’t be the last.

Odds and Sods: Bet on Baby Murray? More Gambling Mess

If it was meant as a motivational tactic, it didn’t work for Gulbis. Monfils went on to take the 6-4, 6-4 victory. But at least Gulbis was nice enough to give the smashed frame to a fan. No, it’s not a playable racquet, but it does make for a quirky souvenir for a die-hard tennis enthusiast.

Gulbis’ record drops to a dismal 12-26 since the beginning of 2016; he’s 1-3 on the season thus far.

Monfils moves on to face Borna Coric in the second round.

In other action in Rotterdam, 19-year-old Hyeon Chung made waves by upsetting Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, while Marcos Baghdatis upset No. 4 seed David Goffin, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(5).

Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated Julien Benneteau, 6-4, 6-4, while Gilles Muller knocked off Andreas Seppi, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.
