Benoit Paire got a rare win against his good friend Stan Wawrinka in Marseille today, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, to set up a semifinal clash with Marin Cilic on Saturday.

Paire, who has now won twice in eight contests vs. Wawrinka, improves to 5-18 vs. the top-10 with the win. Paire, 26, is from Avignon, France a town just over an hour to the north and west of Marseille.

After trading sets with Wawrinka, and trading breaks in the third set, Paire stole the match in the final game when he lofted a perfect backhand lob (see video above) over Wawrinka’s head on his third match point to seal the victory. The Frenchman was aggressive all day with his world-class backhand, and did his share of dictating against Wawrinka—no small feat.
