Nigel Sears Says Bad Sushi May Have Led to Scary Episode in Australia

Nigel Sears collapsed during Ana Ivanovic’s third-round match with Madison Keys at the Australian Open and remained unconscious for nearly two minutes before becoming alert and being whisked off to a local hospital. After a brief stay Sears flew home to rest in England, and just three weeks later he’s back on the tour with Ivanovic.

The 58-year-old Sears told Barry Flatman of the Australian that his heart checked out fine after two electrocardiograms and an angiogram. He says he’s still not sure what caused his fainting episode but he believes it may have been a bit of bad sushi.

“I had sushi for lunch ten days in a row in Melbourne and was fine. But I suppose the law of averages dictates, you get one dodgy bit of raw fish in that time,” he told Flatman.

Sears, who is in Dubai with Ivanovic this week as she plays the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, says he felt like a fraud for bringing so much stress to his family at a time that his daughter, Kim Sears (Andy Murray’s wife) was close to giving birth to the couple’s first child.

Here’s what he told Flatman:

“Frankly, now I feel a bit of a fraud, but at the time I didn’t have a clue what was happening to me and fully appreciate just how terrible it must have looked for everyone watching. I feel so bad having put my wife, daughter and friends through that ordeal.

“Quite honestly my timing could not have been worse, with Kim being just a few days away from giving birth. It was the worst possible time in the worst possible place, being so far away from home. But then I’m thinking if I had blacked out in my hotel room when I was all on my own, what would have happened?"
