The sing-song chants and live band infused the United States Fed Cup tie against host Argentina with some musicality. Venus Williams enjoyed the atmosphere, but pressed the mute button on Argentine come back hopes.
Williams dispatched Maria Irigoyen 6-1, 6-4 to send the Americans into the World Group Playoffs in April.
Some members of the crowd at the Pilara Tennis Club in Buenos Aires sat on a grass slope overlooking the court; fans were so close to the action players can hear their chatter on court.
"Yeah, these smaller stadiums and fans don’t happen too often," Venus said. "It was an awesome atmosphere. The crowd is really supportive of Argentina, but still respective of us. It was fun to play for them."
Coco Vandeweghe replaced Serena Williams, who was ruled out with illness, in today's first reverse singles. World No. 121 Paula Ormaechea took advantage of 54 unforced errors from Vandeweghe in a 6-4, 6-4 win that cut the American lead to 2-1.
The 34-year-old Venus needed just 71 minutes to clinch the tie and raise her Fed Cup singles record to 16-2.
Vandeweghe and Taylor Townsend closed it out earning their first Fed Cup victories with a 6-2, 6-3 doubles triumph, celebrating with a selfie.
