Canada has a great opportunity this weekend, with a Fed Cup tie at home in Quebec City against a Czech team that will be without its most daunting stars. All that is fine and dandy—except for one thing: Their superstar has elected not to play.

Eugenie Bouchard’s decision not to represent her country at a home tie conveniently located in her home province has been accepted by her captain and the Canadian Tennis Federation, but that doesn’t mean they are thrilled the 20-year-old has chosen not to participate.
Bouchard announced on Sunday, through her agency, IMG, that she would not participate. She was spotted two days later in Montreal, watching the Canadiens battle the Buffalo Sabres in NHL action.
“Disappointment, of course. A little bit of a surprise,” Canada’s Fed Cup Captain Sylvain Bruneau said, according to Arash Madani of Sportsnet, when he learned of Bouchard’s decision. “You know, I had a feeling she would play.”
“I can’t complain,” he added. “She’s been very good to us at Fed Cup… I think this time she said ‘You know what? I’m going to skip this one.’”
“Tennis Canada is fully supportive of Genie as she strives towards her goals,” said CEO of Tennis Canada, Kelly Murumets, according to Madani.
But one member of Canada’s Fed Cup team was not as accepting. Gabriela Dabrowski, ranked 185, spoke openly about her feelings on the matter:
“I mean it’s Fed Cup,” Dabrowski said. “It’s something a little bit different than regular tournaments. Like if I had made it, and I was making so much money, I would still want to play Fed Cup because it’s a special opportunity to represent your country, rather than it being more of an individual thing.”
