Szavay commented on her website, "It's a shocking moment, as my life has revolved around tennis for the past 10 years.  It was hard, but I owe a lot to this sport. I learned that I cannot hope for a full recovery from surgery, so I had to realize that, unfortunately, there is no other way. I know this will be a big change in my life, but I have plans and I will get it done."

She had won 5 WTA singles titles and 2 WTA doubles titles during her playing days, and peaked at No. 13 back in 2008.

Szavay has not played since cracking a vertebra a year ago. The Hungarian press is reporting that she may continue to be involved with tennis and may open a tennis school in her native land in Hungary.

Szavay's singles titles included WTA events in Palermo (2007), Beijing (2007), Budapest (2009, 2010) and Prague (2010).
