Goran: Novak Will Be More Motivated in 2020

Novak Djokovic concludes the 2019 season ranked No. 2.

The Wimbledon champion's desire will be second to none in 2020 says coach Goran Ivanisevic.

Best of Decade: 10 Pivotal ATP Moments

Ivanisevic says the fact Rafael Nadal edged Djokovic for the season-ending world No. 1 ranking will prompt the 16-time Grand Slam champion to bring even more fire and desire to court in 2020.

"When [Novak] goes out on the field, I've never seen such concentration, it's incredible, and one can see why he won so many Grand Slams," Ivanisevic told Croatian publication Jutarnji. "Now he will bite even more in the next year, having finished this second position. But we have a great relationship in general, and after all with [co-coach Marian] Vajda, I tell Novak and his career anecdotes.

"Thank God there are videos on YouTube and then he watches and dies with laughter. Really phenomenal collaboration, and mentality and language help a lot."

Djokovic began training in Monte-Carlo this week and will play the Abu Dhabi exhibition next week in preparation for the ATP Cup and Australian Open next month.

Ivanisevic identifies several young players who can challenge Big 3 dominance at Grand Slams with US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev topping the Croatian's list of major contenders.

"Medvedev proved to be the most likely candidate," Ivanisevic said. "Apart from Borna Coric, my two favorite players are Tsitsipas and Shapovalov. They both really play atomic tennis with their hearts, especially Tsitsipas, a Greek who is not afraid to come forward, he showed that in London as well.

"I think the future is good. There is also Zverev who is still playing hot-cold for now, then there are Thiem, Rublev and Khachanov who had a bad year, and there is Borna. It will be interesting, though the three will have plenty to say next year, but there will be flashes of youth for sure."
