Former U.S. Open runner-up Roberta Vinci has announced that she will officially retire at Rome this spring, playing her last match at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia.
The Italian, who is a former No.1 doubles player as well as a five-time major doubles champion, posted a video explaining herself on Twitter on Thursday.
“My last game will be a party,” she wrote. “And you are invited.”
The former World No.7 in singles scored one of the biggest upsets in U.S. Open history when she ended Serena Williams’ run for the calendar-year Grand Slam in 2015. She went on to drop the final to Flavia Pennetta.
Along with Pennetta, Sara Errani and Francesca Schiavone, Vinci was an integral part of the Italian Fed Cup team which won four titles under the watchful eye of Corrado Barazzutti.
Vinci will turn 35 in February. Known for her old-school slice and wicked forehand, she has earned 15 Top 10 wins and 10 titles in singles, to go with 25 doubles titles and over $11 million in overall prize money earnings.
