Talk about a tough crowd.
Despite winning the French and US Open titles, regaining the No. 1 position in the world and finishing the year with a gaudy record of 75-7, Rafael Nadal was not named Player of the Year by the Spanish Tennis Writers Association for the 2013 season.
That award instead went to 31-year-old Tommy Robredo, who resurrected his career and ended the season ranked No. 18 in the world.
The 27-year-old Nadal won 10 titles and made $14.56 million in prize money in 2013.
Meanwhile, Robredo started the year ranked 114th, and was still ranked 72nd when he entered and won the title at Casablanca to move to No. 42. He reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros to rejoin the top 30, won the title at Umag and made the quarterfinals of the US Open, shocking Roger Federer in straight sets in the fourth round to rejoin the Top 20.
Prior to 2013, Robredo's last multi-title year was 2009, and his last appearance in the Top 20 came in 2010.
