Thirty years ago, the quartet of John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl and Pat Cash combined for one of the most memorable semifinal Saturdays in US Open history.
The four men will join forces to recreate the magic this spring at a pair of tournaments in Nashville, Tenn., and Charlotte, NC, as part of the Powershare Series of tournaments. The first matches will be held on March 12 in Nashville, and the second will take place the following night in Charlotte.
Each of the matches will be one set, followed by a one-set championship match between the two winners.
Nearly 30 years ago, McEnroe was the No. 1 seed at the US Open, Lendl the No. 2 seed, Connors No. 3 and the 19-year-old Cash was seeded 15th.
Connors was the defending champion, but McEnroe edged him 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in one semifinal. Cash upset fourth-seeded Mats Wilander in the quarterfinals, but was stopped by Lendl in the other semifinal 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
Two days later, McEnroe swept Lendl 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 in the final for the title. It was McEnroe's seventh and final Grand Slam singles title.
