Second Serve

Russia’s Diana Shnaider has come a long way since the start of 2024. She’s won three titles and steadily climbed the WTA rankings. She was ranked 108 when she won the title in Hua Hin on February 4th. Two more titles – and a lot of quality tennis later – she finds herself as a card-carrying member of the Top-20.

Shnaider, who has won titles on all three surfaces in 2024, comes in at No.20 in Tuesday’s WTA rankings. She reached the semifinals in Toronto, just a week after claiming the silver medal in Paris for women’s doubles (with Mirra Andreeva).

Shnaider’s jump from 24 to 20 is epic, but not nearly as colossal as Amanda Anisimova’s 83-spot jump that takes her from 132 to 49 in this week’s rankings. The 22-year-old who lost to Jessica Pegula in Monday’s final in Toronto, is back in the Top-50 for the first time since April of 2023.

Anisimova Back in the Top-50, Townsend Knocking on the Door

Anisimova took the second half of the season off in 2023, and started 2024 well outside of the Top-300. She was ranked 442 at this year’s Australian Open.

Taylor Townsend was another big riser in this week’s rankings. She jumps 18 spots to a career-high No.53 thanks to reaching the quarterfinals in Toronto.
