Alexei Popyrin scored a major breakthrough on the big stage in Montreal on Monday, defeating Andrey Rublev to earn his first Masters 1000 title. The 25-year-old Aussie, who became the fourth man from his country to win a Masters title, and the first since 2003, is also the biggest riser in the Top 100 of this week’s ATP rankings.
Popyrin jumps 39 spots to a career-high No.23. He’s now the No.2 Aussie behind World No.10 Alex de Minaur and will look to push higher this week in Cincinnati, where Gael Monfils will be his first-round opponent on Wednesday in Mason, Ohio.
The top five of the ATP rankings remains the same but there were some moves in the top 10, as De Minaur slid three spots from seven to 10 and Rublev, the Montreal runner up, move from No.8 to No.6.
Casper Ruud (No.7) and Grigor Dimitrov (No.8) each rose one spot.
Korda, Arnaldi Hit Career Highs
Sebastian Korda and Matteo Arnaldi pushed higher today thanks to semifinal performances at Montreal. Korda comes in at a career-high No.15 (+3), while Arnaldi makes his Top 30 debut (+16) and becomes the No.3 Italian, just ahead of Flavio Cobolli, who also makes a career high at No.31 (+2).
