American tennis is alive and thriving north of the border at 1000-level events in Montreal in Toronto.
Want proof? Look no further than the following stat, which demonstrates the excellent tennis that has been played by the American contingent this week.
Per Opta Sports, Americans have combined to take out the World No.1 in both the ATP and WTA rankings in the same week for the first time since the spring of 2008.
On Friday night Tommy Paul got the ball rolling in Toronto with a 3-6, 4-6, 6-3 triumph over top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz. This afternoon in Montreal Jessica Pegula followed suit with a 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4 takedown of World No.1 Iga Swiatek.
Pegula said it best with her repost of the stat: “This is a sick stat!”
Indeed it is.
Pegula will face either Elena Rybakina or Liudmila Samsonova in the final in Montreal, where she is bidding for her second 1000-level title, while Paul will take on Jannik Sinner in the semifinals tonight in Toronto.
