NEW YORK—Gael Monfils' US Open came to a painfully premature end.
Jammed by a Kei Nishikori shot into the body, Monfils said he felt his right wrist pop while trying to fend off a forehand volley.

The Frenchman had his wrist taped and tried to play on before pulling the plug on a highly-anticipated US Open clash with Nishikori holding a 6-2, 5-4 lead.
"I tried to catch the ball and my wrist was very loose so he went fast at me and I didn't expect it and I don't know my wrist popped," Monfils told the media afterward. "Straightaway, I felt electricity. It was loose. I didn't expect it was play at me so it jammed me a little bit."
The trainer told the 31-year-old Frenchman he was likely suffering from a ligament injury.
"My hand was like shaking so I knew it was too late straightaway," Monfils said. "When he hit me I felt something happened. Then I served my first serve and straightaway I saw I need treatment because something is wrong.
"I don't know I'm pretty pissed now to be honest with you. I guess it's unlucky in the end. I have no idea [the extent of the injury]. I just hope it heals. Maybe it can heal and feel better in a few days or maybe something poppled and it will take two months."
Meanwhile, 2014 Flushing Meadows finalist Nishikori moved on to a third-round meeting with 13th-ranked Diego Schwartzman, who reached the US Open quarterfinals last year.
