Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

A quick by the numbers to get you primed for next week’s U.S. Open main draw action… (Stats Courtesy WTA Tennis and Tennis Abstract)

Novak’s Winning Percentage: It may feel like the sky is falling for the world No. 1 after the Serb suffered an early loss at Wimbledon and the Olympics, but Djokovic is the only player with a winning percentage of above 90 percent on the ATP Tour. The Serb’s 91.1 winning percentage (51-5) is more than ten percent better than everybody but Andy Murray (87.7, 50-7). He’s doing just fine, thank you, and will proceed to New York as the favorite to capture his 13th major, with Murray a very close—and rising—second.

Ace Leaders: The Americans currently are without a Top 20 player, but they’ve got tennis’ ace leader in John Isner. The Georgia native has fired 838 aces in 38 matches. That’s more than double the WTA leader, Karolina Pliskova, who has fired an impressive 407 aces in 45 matches.

Kerber’s Hot! Hot! Hot! Angelique Kerber leads the WTA in wins (47), hardcourt wins (29) and Top 10 wins (7).

Stan’s Second Serve: Stan Wawrinka has won a higher percentage of second serve points than any other ATP player this season. He’s winning 57.7 percent of second offerings. Johanna Konta leads the WTA in that category. The British No. 1 has won 52.6 percent of her second serve points.

Double-Fault Queen: Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko has impressively tossed in 214 double-faults in just 36 matches. Alexander Zverev currently leads the ATP with 214 of his own, in 52 matches.

Open Era U.S. Open Titles: Not only is Serena Williams bidding to pass Steffi Graf on the all-time Grand Slam titles list by winning major title number 23 in New York, she’s also bidding to take sole possession of the all-time Open Era U.S. Open title record. The 34-year-old is currently tied with American Chris Evert in that category with six U.S. Open titles.

Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors are tied with the Open Era title lead on the men’s side with 5.

Most U.S. Open Matches Played, Women: Serena Williams hopes to hit the century mark in matches played at New York. Williams is currently third on the Open Era list for matches with 94. Only Evert (113) and Martina Navratilova (106) have played more.

Novak vs. Top 10: Djokovic owns an otherworldly 18-1 record against the Top 10 in 2016, with his only loss coming to Andy Murray in the Rome final.

Sveta Goes the Distance: Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova leads all WTA players with 16 three-set wins in 2016 (16-6, 72.7). But Germany’s Angelique Kerber has the best third set winning percentage. The world No. 2 has gone 14-5, good for a 73.7 winning percentage in three-set matches.

Young Guns, #NextGen, Rising Stars? Whatever they are called, there are eight teenagers currently in the Top 100 of the WTA (5) and ATP (3) rankings. 19-year-old German Alexander Zverev leads all teenagers in the win category with 32. Russia’s Daria Kasatkina leads the WTA in the win category with 27.
