Hingis and Mirza to Part Ways after 16 Productive Months

Despite unprecedented success over the last 16 months, Team Santina—Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis—has ended their productive partnership.

The split was confirmed on Tuesday.

The team paired for 14 titles, three major titles and a 41-match winning streak and swept up the tennis world in the #Santina craze that saw Mirza become India’s first female No. 1 and also marked a return to relevance for Hingis.

Mirza will work with Barbora Strycova, beginning at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, while Hingis will pair with American CoCo Vandeweghe at the U.S. Open.

After winning four titles to start the season, Hingis and Mirza began to struggle, and have continued to struggle for the last five months, winning only one title in ten events.

But rumors are swirling that there is more to the breakup than poor results. According to the Hindustan Times, Hingis and Mirza may have some bad blood lingering over their two mixed doubles matchups, which came at the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this season. Whether or not this is true, we don’t know, but we do know that the tennis world has seen the last of Team Santina—at least for now.
