The United States Postal Office has added a stamp featuring African-American tennis icon Althea Gisbon, it was announced recently.
Billie Jean King and Katrina Adams announced the news just before the start of the US Open.
Gibson was the first African-American to win a Grand Slam title (the 1956 French Open), and the first black athlete to play international tennis.
Gibson won five singles and six doubles Grand Slams in her career, missing the singles career Slam just barely, losing the 1957 Australian Open final.
She won Wimbledon twice (1957-58) and the US Open the same two years. After winning Wimbledon the first time, she received a ticker-tape parade upon her return to New York City, only the second African-American, after Jesse Owens, to be honored in such a fashion.
She is also the first black woman to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated and Time Magazine.
Amazingly, Gibson was also the first black woman on the LPGA tour. She was banned from many tournaments altogether, and often made to dress in her car because she was banned from the clubhouse.
