Bianca Andreescu is ready to make her return to tennis on the red clay, after a six-month injury hiatus. The Canadian, the 2019 US Open champion and a former World No 4, has accepted a wild card into next week’s Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
Main draw wildcards in Stuttgart were also granted to 2017 champion Laura Siegemund and rising German talent Julie Niemeier.
Andreescu has not played since last year’s BNP Paribas Open, which was played in October, and delayed the start of her season by several months in order to get her body healthy.
"I want to give myself extra time to reset, recover and grow from this (as cliche as that sounds) and continue to inspire by doing charity work, giving back and working on myself because I know by doing this, I will come back stronger than ever," Andreescu said in December.
Andreescu’s ranking has dropped to 119 after her points for reaching last year’s Miami final dropped off.
Andreescu went 17-12 when she did play in 2021, but was just 2-5 against the Top-25 and 4-4 at the Slams. She did reach the secon week at the US Open last September.
Andreescu was seen training on green clay at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, but recently switched scenery and showed up at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain.
