It will be Sharapova's first grass-court appearance since she fell to Serena Williams in the 2015 Wimbledon semifinals. Sharapova is a two-time Birmingham champion, raising the title trophy in 2004-2005.
The five-time Grand Slam champion joins an impressive Birmingham field that includes two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, British No. 1 Johanna Konta and Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka, who swept Sharapova out of Indian Wells in straight-sets in her opener.
The 30-year-old Russian suffered her third straight loss in Indian Wells, marking the first time in 15 years Sharapova suffered three consecutive defeats.
Sharapova split with long-time coach Sven Groeneveld days after her Indian Wells exit then pulled out of Miami due to a forearm injury.
