Hewitt suggested this will be the first of a few doubles appearances he plans to make this season.
The tournament announced Hewitt's wild card on social media.
The 37-year-old Hewitt played his last singles match at the 2016 Australian Open, bowing to then world No. 8 David Ferrer in straight sets.
Two years ago, Hewitt and partner Sam Groth reached the Australian Open round of 16 in doubles.
Hewitt, who won the 2000 US Open doubles crown with Max Mirnyi, has not played a Tour-level doubles match since partnering Jordan Thompson at Wimbledon where the pair fell to Jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil in the second round.
