Serena’s Stellar, Skidding Backhand
Sabine Lisicki was giving
Serena Williams
all she could handle during their quarterfinal on Wednesday in Miami. But the seven-time Miami champion used this phenomenal play to create some distance between herself and the German late in their first-set tiebreaker.
It was a short and sweet play that demonstrated Serena’s supreme athleticism. With Lisicki jumping all over the return and hammering an aggressive approach shot up the line, Serena appears to be in serious trouble.
Apparently not. With tires skidding, Williams slides out wide to fire a slice up the line for a clean winner and three match points. She finishes with a nice little pirouetting celebration that says “oh, yeah, I nailed that on.”
Williams went on to win, 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-3, and will face
Simona Halep
in the Miami semis tonight.
