Novak Djokovic Passes Rafael Nadal in Weeks at No. 1

Novak Djokovic moved past Rafael Nadal and into 6th place on the ATP’s all-time weeks at No. 1 list on Monday, reaching 142 weeks.

'Tweener Alert: Bautista Agut Hits Monday Gem in Monte-Carlo

With such a large gap between No. 1 Djokovic and No. 2 Federer (currently 4,310 points), the Serb has the potential to run the table in 2015. If he does it he’ll pass John McEnroe for 5th on the all-time list on November 9th. Catching McEnroe’s 170 weeks will be an impressive feat, but Djokovic really would have to be a model of consistency if he were to threaten the ATP’s Top 4 in weeks at No. 1. Jimmy Connors (268), Ivan Lendl (270), Pete Sampras (286) and Roger Federer (302) can all breathe safely—at least for two more years.

Only nine players have been at No. 1 for more than 100 weeks in the history of the ATP.

According to James Buddell of ATPWorldTour.com, Djokovic’s compatriot Janko Tipsarevic thinks that Djokovic already has his sights set on passing Federer. “If you ask me personally, his goal, even though it seems far from now, is to pass Federer,” Tipsarevic told ATPWorldTour.com. “I think that his goal is to be the best player of all time.

"I am so happy and proud that he has taken the sport to another level. He did it in the era of Federer and Nadal, the best tennis players in the sport’s history. All of a sudden this guy comes out of nowhere and raises the level even higher, when everyone thought it couldn’t go higher than these two guys.”
