Second Serve

Just when we thought Gael Monfils couldn’t possibly add any more variety of footage to his already vast, limitless highlight reel, the Frenchman does this (see video above.)

No-look forehands or drop shots are one thing, but a no-look while defending? Monfils plays possum, acting as if he’d given up on the point after his dropper fails to deliver the prescribed result against Alexandr Dolgopolov. But just as Dolgopolov becomes convinced that a simple crosscourt forehand is all he needs to produce to secure the point, Monfils suddenly springs into action, as if back from the dead, to steal the point.

He seals it, in true LaMonf fashion, with a cheeky wink. Vintage.

Monfils won the contest, 7-6(5), 7-6(6), and will face Roger Federer in the round of 16.

Credit to Robby Koenig, who came up with the term "Fake and Bake" on his commentary of this match.
