Maria Sharapova Fell Down on Clay, and Twitter Was Fascinated

Maria Sharapova dropped her first decision at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart on Thursday, dropping a match on clay in which she had taken the first set for the first time in 65 matches.

Recap: Sharapova Stunned by Kerber in Stuttgart

It was also the Russian’s first loss in Stuttgart—she had amassed a 13-0 record with three titles in the German city, winning a brand new Porsche each time.

The upset made headlines, but Sharapova’s literal fall seemed to draw more attention from the tennis Twitteratti than the figurative one. Usually when Sharapova's knees touch the dirt it means that she's won another French Open (see pic above), but on this occasion she wasn't so lucky.

During the second set Sharapova, who has improved her footwork on the dirt by leaps and bounds over the past few years, got her right foot caught in the dirt and tumbled over, and, well, people noticed. A lot of people.

For the record, Sharapova did display some dazzling footwork on Thursday as well. You can view that below:
