Reportedly, Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, Little Miss Sunshine, Birdman) has penned the script, and the studio has hired Emma Stone to play King and Steve Carell to play Riggs.
According to Mike Fleming Jr. of Deadline.com, Beaufoy has been quietly working on the script for several years, with King’s cooperation, and it is ready to go.
Fleming reports that HBO Films is also working on a “Battle of the Sexes”-themed script, with Paul Giamatti to play Riggs and Elizabeth Banks to play King, while Chernin entertainment is working on a version to be entitled “Matchmaker” which has Will Ferrell slated for the Riggs role.
The Searchlight production is slated for release in 2016.
