Will Ferrell to Play Bobby Riggs in "The Match Maker"

With his near-oblivious sexism, constant need to be the center of attention and drive to be the best regardless of the setting, anchorman Ron Burgundy could be a dead ringer for hustler Bobby Riggs.

As it so happens, the man who brought San Diego's notorious newsman to life has now signed on to star in a film about Riggs.

Comedic actor Will Ferrell, along with his frequent director Adam McKay, are now attached to a movie based on an article in ESPN the Magazine last year called "The Match Maker," which took a deep look at Riggs, including his potential ties to organized crime and evidence that he bet on, and then threw his legendary "Battle of the Sexes" match against Billie Jean King at the Houston Astrodome in 1973.

Ferrell is no stranger to sports movies, having already covered NASCAR (Talladega Nights), soccer (Kicking and Screaming), basketball (Semi-Pro) and figure skating (Blades of Glory). But the facts behind the Riggs' story seem more destined for a drama, which has us scratching our heads a bit on just how McKay and Ferrell plan to play the piece.

No word on any other casting so far.
