Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

The spring season has commenced with a bang on courts throughout the world. A proud champion has been utterly defeated by a fresh-faced newcomer while several of the most well-known ladies have set their sights on higher rankings.

A recap of the first few tournaments of the clay court season? No, we’re talking HBO’s Game of Thrones here, and just three episodes in to its fourth season, the show’s plot twists have already << SPOILER ALERT >> poisoned a Lion, introduced a Viper and put a crossbow bolt through the throat of a greedy Fool.

Yet the more we watch the show and contemplate on some of its more notorious personalities, the more they remind us of some of our favorite tennis players. Which leads us to this: Tennis Now’s official casting call for Game of Thrones, the tennis edition.

Cast of Characters:

                Delpo
Juan Martin Del Potro as Jamie Lannister
Several years ago, they dubbed Lannister the Kingslayer when he took out the most powerful player in the land (Aemon Targareyn/Roger Federer). Since then, a terrible injury has him wondering what his future holds.

                Berdych got
Tomas Berdych as Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish
Baelish can’t fight and wasn’t born a noble, but all of a sudden he’s got a whole fortress (Harrenhahl) all to himself and is on his way to marry into another one (The Eyrie). Berdych has never won a Grand Slam title and has only made it to one final, yet he’s been ranked in the Top 8 for the last four years. How do these two keep being so successful?

                sloane
Sloane Stephens as Margarey Tyrell
She’s young, she’s charming, she’s beautiful ... and just below the surface lurks an ambition to rise to the top by any means necessary. She’ll smile her prettiest just before she bites your head off ... or launches a forehand down your throat.

                woz got
Caroline Wozniacki as Sansa Stark
She used to have it all, engaged to the king-to-be / ranked No. 1 in the world; but things have gone sour since, and now she’s just trying to make her way back up the rungs to relevance. Here’s hoping she’s not just another pretty face.

                serena got
Serena Williams as Olenna Tyrell, aka The Queen of Thorns
They don’t come much more prickly than Olenna or Serena, both of whom have been around for a while and neither of whom has a problem speaking her mind. Both are fiercely loyal to their own families.

                simona got
Simona Halep as Arya Stark
She seemed so adorable during her early episodes, then all of a sudden she’s stabbing guys through the neck and mocking them as the blood drains out. Halep has gone from cute to a legitimate threat against any opponent, despite being the youngest player in the Top 10.

                verdasco got
Fernando Verdasco as Oberyn Martell
The swarthy Red Viper from Dorne has made his presence felt early and often in the fourth season, with his good looks centering plenty of attention on him, just like Verdasco and his streak of lovely famous girlfriends and modeling opportunities. On the court, or in Martell’s case, the battlefield, both can also be quite lethal.

                stan got
Stanislas Wawrinka as Stannis Baratheon
Not only is there the name similarity, but if it weren’t for the convoluted defending of points system, Wawrinka would be No. 1 right now, having already won the Australian Open and Monte-Carlo, yet he’s still mired at No. 3. Baratheon has the best claim to the Iron Throne - the older brother of the deceased king, but instead he’s had to wait in line behind both bastard Lannister sons.
