Teymuraz Gabashvili stunned World No. 5 David Ferrer at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday.
The Russian notched his first top ten victory since the 2010 French Open, when he defeated Andy Roddick, and improved his career record against the top ten to 3-16.
Gabashvili raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening set before Ferrer, a four-time finalist at the event, stormed back to level.
With Ferrer holding double-break point at 4-all later in the set, Gabashvili won the next eight points, breaking to love to take the opener.
Gabashvili would race out to a 3-0 lead in the second set as well, and after saving the only two break points he faced, he broke Ferrer to secure the upset on his second match point when the Spaniard's forehand sailed wide.
Ferrer wasn't the only big name to fall in Barcelona. Third-seeded Fabio Fognini retired with an injury after dropping the first ten games to Santiago Giraldo, while 8th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov fell to Albert Montanes, 7-6(5), 6-3.
