Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Look around the ATP and count up how many guys you see rocking no-sleeve shirts. The numbers aren’t very high these days, and they seem to be dwindling by the season.

Rafa Nadal used to be an iconic symbol of sleevelessness, but four years ago he decided to cover his bulging biceps.

Ever since the Spaniard started covering up, other pros have followed his example. It was refreshing to see Gael Monfils sleeveless in Melbourne this year, but he has since gone the short sleeve route.

But one man stands out among the sleeves. American tennis gladiator Mike Russell always sports the no sleeves, and with guns like his, who can blame him?

“Yep, I’m the last of the Mohicans,” said Russell when asked about his sleeveless look. “My wife likes it so I’m going to keep wearing it.”

Sleeveless men have become a rarity on the tour in comparison with several years ago. The question is why? Why hide your arms? Have players become self-conscious? Is it not trendy anymore? Rest assured, as long as 34-year-old Michael Russell is on the tour we will have one pair of bare biceps out there.
